How to Store Strawberries for Lasting Freshness
Every year I look forward to strawberry season. These gorgeous ruby colored berries come into season in the Spring and early Summer and you’ll see them popping up in the markets in plentiful supply.
I absolutely LOVE everything strawberry. I enjoy them fresh as a snack or a lite breakfast. I love to freeze them and add them to smoothies or bake them into muffins. I also love fresh sliced strawberries as a salad topper or sprinkled over a smoothie bowl or fresh oatmeal. There are countless ways to enjoy these beauties but a lot of people miss out because they buy them, store them incorrectly and a few days later they have rotten and moldy berries on hand – no fun.
Waste not with my absolute favorite simple and easy tip for How to Store Strawberries for Lasting Freshness:
1. Wash strawberries with an all natural organic fruit and veggie wash to get off any residue, handling germs and dust.
2. Lay flat on a paper towel or clean kitchen towel to completely dry (this step is important).
3. Store in an airtight glass container in the fridge adding 1 sheet of paper towel folded on top.
4. Lastly, enjoy days of FRESH strawberries in every which way you like. Now…there IS a science to why this works but you can either Google that or just trust me!
Optional: Switch out the paper towel (which usually gets moist) with a fresh sheet every second day to extend the life. Now, berries RARELY last that long in my house but this is a great tip for when berries are on super sale and you can buy them in bulk!
This tip works with most berries as they have similar properties. So don’t shy away from splurging on blueberries, blackberries and raspberries that will all come into season very soon. Just know that they’re delicate and plan to take a few extra steps to stretch these nutrient-rich, antioxidant-filled delicious little gems. Enjoy!
