Recipe: Nourishing Avocado Honey Hair Mask
Hi there!
If you read my blog then you know I am a self-care junkie! It wasn’t always that way. Over the years of experiencing burn out, low energy, trouble sleeping, anxiety, worry and fear, I knew I needed to get a better handle on nourishing myself with loving activities. Now that I have incorporated self-care into my life on the regular…I must admit, there is no going back. Self-care is a practice that I bring into each and every client session(and hey, my clients thank me for it!).
Taking [great] care of ourselves in essential to living well.
When we shower ourselves with loving activities of care we begin to fill up our tank again. When we are feeling our best is when we can give the world all of our gifts… take care of others, put our inspiration ideas into action, be more present, have more energy, sleep better, you name it.
One of the ways I have incorporated self-care into my life is by creating rituals to take better care of my hair, skin and nails. Hey, I’m a girly girl… so be it! When I make the time to care for myself I just feel better. When I don’t make the time, I don’t feel like myself and therefore everything else in my life suffers.
So why not start the day with our best foot forward??
Let’s get to the real reason for this post…
This is going to sound off-topic, but I love avocados. However, sometimes I buy them in bulk (especially if they are on sale, home girl loves a deal!). But on occasion they get too ripe to eat, so I have started to incorporate them in others ways as to not waste their goodness. Today I share with you one of my favorite ways to use avocados in a DIY hair treatment. In these colder, drier months I am always looking for ways to nourish my hair and skin in non-toxic, natural ways.
This hair mask takes less than 5 minutes to assemble and the results are shiny, nourishing locks. Let me know if you try this recipe as I always love hearing from you about what works!
Avocado Honey Nourishing DIY Hair Mask
You’ll Need:
1 Whole Over Ripe Avocado
1 Egg
2 Tbsp Honey (I used raw, organic)
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil (I used organic, unrefined, cold-pressed…what I had on hand)
To Make:
In a mixing bowl using a hand mixer, beat the egg until fully combined.
Beaten Eggs
In another dish, melt the coconut oil in the microwave for 20 seconds or so.
Melted Coconut Oil
Then add the oil to the egg mixture and using the hand mixer blend to incorporate. In the same dish you used to heat the oil, warm the honey in the microwave for about 20 seconds until it thins a bit. Add honey to the mixture and blend with a hand mixer to fully incorporate (you get the gist.
Melted Honey
Then, slice the avocado, de-pit, and scoop the flesh into the mixture.
Over Ripe Avo
Using then hand mixer, blend for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is fully incorporated.
Before Blending (all ingredients)…
After…
To apply, scoop the mixture into your palm and run through damp hair ends to root with fingers. I have medium length hair and typically try to use the entire mixture. Comb hair to fully incorporate and then tie hair into a loose bun and secure with a hair tie. Wait 20 mins to rinse and then rinse out with water and shampoo as normal.
I like to turn this into a whole luxurious selfcare affair and typically run a bubble bath, and do a salt and essential oil soak while I’m passing the on the hair mask…glorious! If you’ll be watching tv to pass the time or otherwise, I suggest covering your masked hair with a shower cap.
Other things to do while you wait: read a magazine, check email, sit quietly in meditation, play games on your iPhone.
Enjoy silky smooth fortified hair!
